The Presidio
One of the great things about living in California is the ability to enjoy some of the best weather year round. For those visiting San Francisco, there may be no better place to enjoy the weather than at the Presidio.
Serving as a military post from 1176-1994, the Presidio played a logistical role in every US conflict for over 100 years. In 1994 it became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Today the park welcomes visitors on a daily basis as they tour more than 500 historic buildings, a national cemetery, and a historic airfield. Add to all of this the natural beauty of forests, beaches, coastal bluffs and miles of hiking and biking and you have one of the most scenic areas in all of San Francisco.
For those looking to get some fun in the sun the Presidio has 11 miles of hiking trails. Cyclists can bike along the 14 miles of paved roads as well as some parts of the Bay Area Bridge Trail that is unpaved. For the sailing and fishing fanatic, a board sailing area runs along Crissy Field. Fishing opportunities are plentiful from the nearby rocks and pier.
With all of the natural beauty one of the biggest concerns is that of preservation. That is why the Presidio has set up programs designed to protect the park for years to come. A self guided tour book takes children and adults along the Ecology Trail and teaches them how to appreciate the park and its natural resources. The Golden Gate National Parks Service has established a serious of outdoor classrooms that teaches students about native habitats, ancient redwood groves and coastal preserves.
Whether you are looking for some fun in the sun or an in-depth look at some of the natural beauty that the state has, look no further than the Presidio.
