The Haight
If there's any area of San Francisco that conjures images of the long-gone '60s hippie culture, the Haight is it.
Memorabilia from the incense burning, acid dropping, tie-dye wearing, flower-power vibing era can be bought at smoke shops and Eastern influenced shops with names like Pipe Dreams and The Love of Ganesha are signs of times gone by. Today, the Haight is a whole new scene as it boasts high end vintage clothing retailers, fashion boutiques, Internet Cafes and chic restaurants.
While the Haight may seem to cater to high end clientele, it is still a place where the regular folk can still come to grab a burrito before heading out to get that new piercing or just sit back and do a little old fashioned people watching.
Before you set out for the Haight, you may want to consider the fact that the Haight is divided into two different areas. Upper Haight runs from Stanyan to Masonic and is home to the high end shopping area. Aside form all the high end shops, the Upper Haight has a little bit of historical value to it for music fans. It is home to a house that was shared by members of the Grateful Dead. It also hosts the Haight Street Fair and has the 36 acre Buena Vista Park, the perfect place for take a nice jog or just lay on the green grass and enjoy the same view that has become immortalized in the TV series Full House. The Lower Haight runs from Divisidero to Webster is a more diverse neighborhood with a little bit of a grittier feel. The Lower Haight has been a haven for the alternate night club goers. With bars and clubs like Mad Dog and Nickie's, it's no wonder why Lower Haight has become a main draw among DJ's and ravers.
