Mission District

Chinatown and Japan town may get most of the attention when it comes to cultural neighborhoods in San Francisco, but one area that should not get overlooked is the Mission District which has become known as the Mecca of Mexican/Hispanic culture.
Located on 24th Street, the Mission District has become a colorful celebration of the Hispanic culture. The streets are filled with taquerias, bakeries, restaurants, specialty shops and fresh produce shops.
One of the centerpieces of the district has got to be Mission Dolores. Mission Dolores is known as one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco and also has a cemetery dedicated to some of the city's pioneers. The Mission District is also decorated with the largest collection of murals in the city. Stroll along the streets and check out the murals that depict the passions, pleasures and pitfalls of the artists and the Mexican culture as a whole.
For those that make the trip to the Mission District in May, you are going to get the chance to experience a true fiesta. The month of May comes with celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo and Carnaval which is considered to be San Francisco's version of Mardi Gras.
If you happen to be in San Francisco and are looking to expand your horizons and celebrate one of the city's most colorful cultures, the Mission District is the perfect place to go.
