With almost two thousand plant species, the San Francisco Conservatory of flowers allows guests the chance to get a truly tropical experience without leaving the city.
Located near the eastern end of the Golden Gate Park, opened in 1879 and boasts the classic look of Victorian architecture. The conservatory is North America's oldest and is still one of the most frequented sights in the city. The conservatory is a replica of the Royal Botanical Gardens in England complete with with the 14-ton glass dome.
In this awe-inspiring museum of living plants, the five galleries will draw visitors into the beauty. Displays inform visitors of the rapid changes that take place in the tropical habitats and the efforts that are ongoing to help keep the habitats in tact. Gardens in the conservatory are planted seasonally and from time to time are fashioned like billboards.
The east side of the conservatory is surrounded by cypress, pine and redwood trees that bloom in the summer and fall. To the west of the conservatory is the Rhodendron Dell that contains 850 varieties, the most of any garden in the country. The Dell is one of the favorite spots for Mother's Day picnics.
The conservatory also offers a guided exploration tour for third and fourth grade classes in an effort to teach them about habitats worldwide. Students get to learn about habitats ranging from lowland jungles to the Amazon River Basin. They also learn what it is about the plants that make them thrive in their habitats.
For those that are flower and plant enthusiasts, or those just looking to enjoy the blooming landscape and the fragrant smells, the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers is a sight that has to be seen.
