Castro District

Part of the attraction of San Francisco is experiencing all of the different cultures that the city affords. No complete would be complete without a trip to the Castro District whish is described as the "Gay Mecca" of the city.
With such a variety of things to do it is easy to spend the day wandering though all the boutiques and bookstores. For the movie buff, this is a must see as the Castro is one of the last surviving movie palaces that features movie revivals and offers up pre-film concerts. The Castro also pays homage to figures that will go down in gay and lesbian history. The Harvey Milk Plaza is dedicated to the first openly gay elected official in the country. Pink Triangle serves as a memorial to 15,000 lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender people that lost their lives during the Holocaust.
For those that are looking to get involved in the gay and lesbian movement, you may want to plan your trip to the Castro during June. Each June the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Celebration Parade takes over the streets and draws nearly 500,000 people that are either participating in the parade or just come out to witness the event. If you are unable to make the trip in June, then you may want to check out the Castro Street Fair that takes place each October, it is a perfect time to check out all the shops and vendors without having to go store to store.
For those that want to get a truly unique experience that blends several cultures into one, the Castro District is a place that you can't pass up.
